06/24/2014 - Wilhelms dominant in W over Slinger

With a 13 game win streak on the line the Niners turned to ace Sam Wilhelms Sunday to face the pesky Slinger Stingers. After coming off a rain-out on Saturday at Ashippun the Niners were ready to break out the lumber on Sunday at home. That didn't happen at all and it turned into a pitching duel between Wilhelms and Slinger starter Austin Massey.

Neither team brought their bats this day as both teams failed to produce hardly a threat at all. Slinger's best chance came in the 7th after a single and double. However, Wilhelms got a crucial strikeout to end the threat. After 9 complete the game was still scoreless. In the bottom half the Niner finally prevailed with 2 outs with first baseman Jace Unrein driving a ball to left which was dropped by the slinger fielder. With Unrein on second up stepped Jordan DeBoer who quickly drove a single up the middle for a game winning RBI  and 1-0 final. "It sure wasn't what I expected. We are not swinging the bats well at all, but a win is a win and we will take it, added manager Tim Norton.  With the win the Niners claim sole possession of first place with a 9-1 record. Wilhelms was again the star of the game going all 10 innings allowing 6 hits with no walks and 7 strikeouts.

The 49ers will next play wed/ Thursday night in West Bend in night league action. Then the annual summer classic will take place Saturday in Slinger at 2pm. The Niners return to Rock River league play next Sunday at home versus the Lebanon Whitetails. Revenge will be on the minds of the Niner as Lebanon gave them their only blemish of the league season back in early May. Game time is set for 1:30 come on out and see some great amateur baseball.
